Set up Jomablue CX and your printer to print Butterfly Name Badges at your badge desk.
What Is a Butterfly Name Badge
A Butterfly Name Badge is a type of Name Badge made of two pages folded together, rather than printed as a single card. Choose it to print on both the front and back of a badge. It uses twice the stock of a Standard Badge of the same size, and you fold it after printing.
Before You Begin
• Update Jomablue CX on your iOS device to the latest version. Butterfly Name Badge printing needs v1.11.0 or above.
• Butterfly badge stock and lanyards. Order stock ahead of your event and keep spare stock on hand.
• Recalibrate the printer whenever you change badge type, size, colour, material, supplier or batch, and after moving the sensor. A new box from the same batch only needs Feed pressed once or twice.
Butterfly Badge Types
Three Butterfly badge types are available, each named by its finished size once folded. The flat size, with the front and back on one sheet, is twice as long.

Setting Up the Printer
1. Before you turn on the printer, open the printer cover and load the badge stock with the black mark facing down and entering first.
2. Lift the front edge to check the mark is on the underside.
3. Close the print head, leaving about 1in (25mm) of badge out the front. Don’t press Pause yet.
4. Turn on the printer. In Jomablue CX, open Settings > Badge Printing and select your printer.
5. Set the values for your badge, saving as you go. Max Length is under Advanced. The other values are under Printer and paper. When CX asks to resize the badge design, choose Yes on both prompts.
Paper size
4in x 6in: 100mm x 300mm (3.9in x 11.8in). 4in x 3in: 97mm x 148mm (3.8in x 5.8in)
The printable area of the flat sheet, so slightly smaller than the flat size.
Z Fold Marker
Mark
Tells the printer to use the black mark to find where each badge ends.
Markers per Badge
1
The number of black marks on each badge. Both sizes have one. Set 2 only if your stock has a black mark on every page.
Butterfly Printing
Bottom Fold (Print on Front & Back) or Top Fold (Print on Front & Back)
Choose Bottom Fold if the lanyard slots are at either end of your stock, or Top Fold if they meet in the middle at the fold.
Bottom Fold puts the front page on top, and Top Fold puts it at the bottom.
Print on Front & Back prints both pages, with the back page upside-down so it reads correctly once folded.
Print on Front prints the front page only.
Recalibrate whenever you change badge type, size, colour, material, supplier or batch, and after moving the sensor. A new box from the same batch only needs Feed pressed once or twice. Run SmartCal if you switch between peel-and-fold and double-sided stock, or if prints go wrong.
Designing Your Badge
1. Select
Edit Badge Design and design the front of your badge. The design size for each page is 100mm x 150mm (3.9in x 5.9in) for 4in x 6in badges and 97mm x 74mm (3.8in x 2.9in) for 4in x 3in badges. Keep text well inside each page, away from the trim edge and the fold, as text at the very edge can print slightly cut off. With
Print on Front & Back, the back repeats the front design. For layout options, see
Name Badge Layout Options.
2. Select Print Test Badge and check the alignment. Do this before event day. CX may then re-read the paper size from the printer and show a value 2 to 3mm different from your design.
Folding & Assembling the Badge
• Double-sided (4in x 6in and 4in x 3in): fold along the perforated line, then clip a lanyard through a slot to hold the two halves together.
• 4in x 6in peel-and-fold: peel the badge from the backing sheet, starting at the top edge and working down. Fold the two halves together along the perforated fold line, then clip a lanyard through a slot to hold the folded badge together.
Fixing Media Out & Alignment Issues
If the printer shows Media Out, keeps feeding or doesn’t stop at tear-off, work through these steps in order. Peel-and-fold stock can trigger these issues, because it has both gaps and a black mark for the printer to detect.
1. Check the stock. If it has run out, load more.
2. Check the values in Jomablue CX. In Settings > Badge Printing, confirm the values match the table, then save. Setting Z Fold Marker to Mark also sets the printer’s sensor to Reflective.
3. Move the sensor. The centre position senses gaps, and the off-centre position senses black marks. Open the print head and slide the sensor off-centre, aimed at the black mark, about 30mm (1.2in) in from either edge. Keep it between the lanyard slots and clear of the stock edges. Close the print head, then recalibrate.
4. Restart and reapply. Turn the printer off and on. Any print job in progress is lost. In Jomablue CX, reapply the settings and confirm the values show.
5.
Run SmartCal. See
Configure and calibrate in CX. Then reapply the settings in Jomablue CX, which also resets the sensor to Reflective, and press
Pause to resume.
If the issue continues, contact Jomablue Support.
Fixing Print Quality Issues
If prints are faint, cut off or on the wrong side, check these first:
• Faint print: raise Darkness in small steps, under Advanced in Settings > Badge Printing. If you use a ribbon, check it’s loaded ink side towards the badge. Clean the printhead.
• Design cut off: set the media guides so the badge slides through snugly without bending. Recalibrate if you recently changed stock.
• Printing on the wrong side: reload the stock with the black mark facing down, fed the right way round. Check the design isn’t rotated 180°. If it still prints on the wrong page, recalibrate so the printer finds the mark.
If the issue continues, contact Jomablue Support.
Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between a Standard Badge and a Butterfly Badge?
A Standard Badge is a single card printed on one side. A Butterfly Badge is two pages folded together.
Can I print on the back of a Butterfly Badge?
Yes. Choose Print on Front & Back under Butterfly Printing. The back repeats the front design.
Do I need to change settings when switching between Standard and Butterfly badges?
Yes. For Standard Badges, return the sensor to the centre if you moved it. Then update the badge settings in Jomablue CX and calibrate the printer. See Configure and calibrate in CX.
The printer shows Media Out. What do I do?
Work through Fixing Media Out & Alignment Issues, starting with the stock and the values in Jomablue CX.
